jag har faktiskt just frågat en person, en finsk tjej som jobbar på nåt biståndsprojekt i banjul, gambia. och här är hennes svar:

Okey, it's relatively easy to travel to The Gambia from Sweden since there are travel operators doing direct flights from Arlanda to Banjul. In terms of finding an interesting country to go to as an artist, I would probably not recommend The Gambia. Why..? I really don't know where the shortage of creativity in this lilliput African country comes from but to be honest, Senegal and Mali are much more inspirating countries. The arts and crafts etc. is more fascinating in the neighbouring countries, but then again, I've been here for one year already, and I might have got "blind" to all those things you might find totally interesting. I mean, this is Africa, and different from Europe.

I love it here, I love living without stress. Everything's much more laid back in here. You might love it. The GMT is Greenwich Mean Time in Europe, here it's Gambian Maybe Time.

As I said, everyday life is much more relaxed than in Europe. It's warm (hot) all the time. People (locals) might harness you since you're white because it means you might buy them a ticket to Europe. I pay for my flat around 190/month (1 bedroom, livingroom, bathroom, kitchen), and use around 70/week for everything else. I do live quite western life (go out eating, drinking etc.), so if you wanna live like the locals, you could save much more money.

The prices of groceries are about the same as in Europe = expensive. Beer is cheap (1-1,5 ). If you don't need products (canned food, toilet paper, cheese, sausages, pasta, etc. = western food), and buy your vegetables and dried fish from a local market place, life is, again, less expensive.

The Gambia is a relatively safe country. This is a tourism orientated country. The president is a dictator but it doesn't seem to bother the Gambians too much… he just got re-elected. Yeah, so, it's quite safe in here.
